SALESIANER and Partners Send a Strong Signal for Circularity in the Textile Sector

The alliance initiated by Austrian Airlines, CAT, ÖBB, Post, Wiener Linien and SALESIANER to recycle workwear has been honoured at this year’s BUSINESSART Awards as one of the “Sustainable Shapers”. The recognition highlights the significance of this collaboration, which demonstrates how circular textile systems can successfully function across industries.

The aim of the project is to treat discarded workwear not as waste, but as a valuable resource. During the pilot phase alone, around 50 tonnes of textile waste are avoided each year. The recovered fibres can be mechanically processed and spun into new yarns – a practical example of how closed-loop textile cycles can be implemented in Austria. Full-service provider TURNS manages essential steps such as sorting and fibrerecovery, while EY denkstatt supports the project as an independent sustainability advisor.

For SALESIANER, the initiative holds particular importance, as circular textile processes have long been embedded in the company’s sustainability approach. As one of the largest textile service providers in the country, SALESIANER contributes both industry expertise and logistical capabilities to the partnership.

This joint initiative demonstrates the potential of consistently implemented circular economy practices. Recycling workwear not only reduces waste, but also creates ecological and social value along the entire value chain. For SALESIANER, this pilot project is an important step toward advancing textile sustainability – and proving that meaningful impact can only be achieved together, says Mathias Nell, Head of Sustainability at the SALESIANER Group.

The award reinforces the direction taken by the “Uniform Recycling Pioneers” and shows how cooperation enables measurable progress. The project sets new standards for handling textile resources and encourages additional organizations to join the path toward a resource-efficient future.
